Protecting Against Prompt Injection: Safeguarding AI Bots in Cybersecurity

Following on from our recent article about Generative AI and ChatGPT, concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on cyber security continue to increase. This has been emphasised by the NCSC’s (National Cyber Security Centre’s) recent warning to businesses concerning prompt injection attacks.

WHAT EXACTLY IS PROMPT INJECTION?

Prompt injection refers to the act of manipulating the input prompts given to AI models to generate biased or undesirable outputs. AI bots, powered by models like GPT-3, are designed to provide responses based on the input they receive. Malicious actors exploit this feature by crafting deceptive prompts that lead the AI bot to generate harmful or sensitive content. This is why it is critical for any business which uses chatbots to be aware of the risk to their data.

WHAT ARE THE VULNERABILITIES

For businesses, vulnerable systems can include chatbots, virtual assistants, automated response systems or any service that incorporates a LLM (Large Learning Model). LLM’s are a type of A.I model that use deep learning techniques and large data sets to generate content. Though phishing and stolen credentials remain the most common attack vectors in 2023 (as outlined in IBM’s Cost of Data Breach 2023 Report), there have been several reported examples of successful prompt injection attacks on AI based applications this year.

In February 2023 a student at Stanford University ncalled Kevin Liu used a prompt injection attack to discover Bing Chat's initial prompt; a list of statements that governs how it interacts with people who use the service. In many ways this example resembles social engineering attacks. MathGPT, a publicly accessible app based on ChatGPT-3 was also compromised by an actor who managed to access the applications API key (Application Programming Interface; a set of programming code that enables data transmission between one software product and another) and execute a denial-of-service attack. This could have enabled them to exhaust the applications API query budget or even bring down the application itself.

  • Content Moderation: Employ content moderation systems to flag and remove harmful or inappropriate content generated by AI bots. Human oversight can help in quickly identifying and mitigating threats.

  • User Authentication: Implement user authentication measures to prevent unauthorized access to AI bots. This can help prevent malicious actors from exploiting AI bots for harmful purposes.

  • Monitoring and Reporting: Establish robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms to detect and respond to prompt injection attacks promptly. Early detection is crucial in preventing the spread of harmful content.

  • User Education: Educate users about the potential risks associated with AI bots and the importance of responsible usage. Encourage users to report any suspicious or harmful content generated by AI bots.
